OVERVIEW
Cotopaxi rises above a high plateau south of Quito, surrounded by páramo grassland, glacial streams and open views towards other peaks. A national park protects the upper slopes and surrounding ecosystem. Roads lead to a high refuge, while lower areas support hiking, cycling and horseback riding.
Altitude, cold and wind affect even short excursions, and cloud can hide the summit for long periods. Climbing to the top requires technical skill and accredited guides, while non-climbers can still experience the landscape from trails and viewpoints. Volcanic activity can alter access, so current official information is essential.
