OVERVIEW
The Costa Smeralda occupies a section of north-eastern Sardinia where pale granite headlands divide small beaches and sheltered bays. Purpose-built villages, yacht marinas and luxury hotels are integrated into low hills rather than dense urban centres. The landscape remains striking despite its strong association with high-end tourism.
Boat trips reveal the coastline most effectively, reaching coves and nearby islands that are difficult to access by road. Beaches are small and can fill quickly in summer, while dining and accommodation are expensive. Inland villages and quieter northern shores provide a more local counterpoint to the resort environment.
