OVERVIEW
Chefchaouen lies in a mountain valley, with a small medina climbing steep slopes beneath rocky peaks. Houses, doorways and lanes are painted in many shades of blue, while a central square, fortress and mosque anchor the old town. The surrounding countryside contains cedar forest, villages and walking routes.
The blue washed lanes and steep stairways are most atmospheric in the softer morning and evening light. Tourism is substantial around the central square, but ordinary household life remains visible on upper residential streets. Short walks into the surrounding Rif foothills provide wider views and help place the town within its rugged mountain setting.
