OVERVIEW
Capitol Reef protects a long wrinkle in the earth’s crust where colourful sandstone cliffs, domes and canyons extend across southern Utah. A river corridor cuts through the dry landscape, supporting orchards planted by nineteenth-century settlers. The central scenic road provides access to short walks, historic buildings and deeper canyon routes.
Many of the best features are close to the main valley, but unpaved roads lead towards quieter districts and vast viewpoints. Fruit can be picked seasonally from the historic orchards, creating an unusual contrast with the desert surroundings. Flash floods and heat affect canyon access, while night skies remain exceptionally clear.
