OVERVIEW
Cagliari rises from the coast around a fortified hilltop quarter, where narrow lanes, towers and pale stone buildings overlook the harbour. Lower districts contain markets, arcaded streets and busy commercial areas, while a broad beach and nearby wetlands extend east of the centre. The city’s layered history reflects Phoenician, Roman, Pisan and later Mediterranean influences.
Views change quickly between elevated old streets, waterfront avenues and flat lagoon landscapes. Flamingos are often visible in the wetlands, while the main market provides a strong introduction to seafood and regional cooking. The historic centre involves steep climbs, but lifts and viewpoints make its different levels easier to connect.
