Cádiz occupies a narrow peninsula almost enclosed by the Atlantic, with the historic centre packed behind old sea walls. Stone streets lead between plazas, churches and tall merchant houses built during the city’s trading peak, while beaches begin close to the centre. Its long maritime history remains visible in defensive forts, watchtowers and views across the harbour.

Daily life spills easily into squares, food markets and seafront promenades. The old centre is compact enough to explore without a fixed route, and frequent glimpses of water prevent its dense streets from feeling enclosed. Seafood and carnival traditions add a strong local identity, while sunsets over the western beach are among the city’s simplest pleasures.
