OVERVIEW
The Black Hills form an isolated mountain region in western South Dakota, covered by pine forest and broken by granite spires, caves and open meadows. Mount Rushmore and the unfinished Crazy Horse Memorial are the best-known landmarks, while wildlife parks, scenic roads and former mining towns reveal a broader landscape and history.
Driving routes wind through narrow tunnels and high viewpoints, with bison, deer and wild turkeys often seen in protected areas. The region is also deeply significant to Lakota people, who regard the hills as sacred. Tourist towns can be busy in summer, but quieter trails and forest roads offer a different experience away from the main monuments.
