OVERVIEW
The Black Forest covers a long upland region in south-west Germany, with densely wooded mountains, open pasture and deep valleys. Northern areas contain spa towns and gentler hills, while the south rises towards higher peaks and glacial lakes. Farmhouses, small villages and historic towns are spread throughout rather than gathered around one central base.
Walking, cycling and scenic drives connect waterfalls, viewpoints and rural inns. Local traditions remain visible in woodcarving, cakes, cured meats and distinctive farmhouse architecture, though the region is more varied than its tourist symbols suggest. Public transport serves many valleys, but choosing a base near the landscapes of greatest interest makes exploration easier.
