OVERVIEW
Basel sits on the Rhine at the meeting point of Switzerland, France and Germany. Its old centre climbs from the river towards civic squares, medieval streets and a red sandstone cathedral, while modern architecture and major pharmaceutical offices extend across both banks. Art museums and long-established cultural institutions give the compact city influence beyond its size.
The river is part of everyday life, especially in summer when residents float downstream through the centre. Trams make different districts easy to reach, and cross-border travel is woven into the metropolitan area. The city is polished and expensive, but local cafés, neighbourhood streets and seasonal festivals prevent it from feeling like a purely institutional centre.
