OVERVIEW
Bissau lies beside a broad tidal estuary, with a compact centre of faded Portuguese-era buildings, government offices and tree-lined streets. The old port, central market and residential quarters show a city shaped by trade with nearby islands and inland communities. Much of the architecture is weathered, and daily commerce often occupies pavements and open-air stalls.
The waterfront remains central, with ferries and cargo boats linking the capital to the Bijagós Islands and other coastal areas. Music, food and social life are strongest in informal bars and neighbourhood streets. Services can be inconsistent, but the small scale makes the centre more approachable than many larger regional capitals.
