OVERVIEW
The Bijagós Islands form a large, low-lying archipelago off the coast of Guinea-Bissau. Mangroves, mudflats, savannah and palm-fringed beaches support sea turtles, migratory birds and a small population of saltwater-adapted hippos. Many islands remain lightly developed, and local communities retain distinctive religious traditions and systems of land use.
Travel between islands depends on boats, tides and weather, with only limited tourist infrastructure outside a few bases. Wildlife viewing and cultural visits require patience and local guidance. The remoteness protects much of the archipelago’s ecological character, but it also means that journeys are less predictable than in more established island destinations.
