OVERVIEW
Big Bend is a large desert region in far west Texas, centred on a broad bend of the Rio Grande and protected mainly within a national park. Limestone canyons cut through the river corridor, while the Chisos Mountains rise abruptly from dry plains and cactus-covered slopes. Distances are long, settlements are sparse and the horizon often feels unusually open.
Driving connects most areas, but hiking reveals the greatest contrast between river canyons, desert flats and cooler mountain woodland. Clear skies support excellent stargazing, and hot springs provide one of the few places to sit beside the river. Heat, limited services and remoteness require planning, especially outside the cooler months.
