OVERVIEW
Carlsbad Caverns is a vast cave system beneath the Chihuahuan Desert of southern New Mexico. The principal cavern contains one of North America’s largest underground chambers, reached either by a steep natural entrance route or an elevator. Stalactites, columns and delicate formations fill passages shaped over millions of years.
Self-guided paths cover the main chamber, while ranger-led tours enter narrower and less developed sections. At certain times of year, hundreds of thousands of bats leave the natural entrance at dusk in a remarkable mass flight. Surface trails show the dry desert above, emphasising how little the underground scale is visible from outside.

THINGS TO DO
Watch the night sky in Carlsbad Caverns
Use Carlsbad Caverns’ darkest viewing area for a night-sky session away from the strongest local light. Cloud, moonlight and seasonal access affect visibility, so check conditions before making a special journey.
Walk Carlsbad Caverns’ desert trails
Choose a walk around Carlsbad Caverns’ desert trails that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
Hiking
2 hours to full day
Look for desert wildlife in Carlsbad Caverns
Look for wildlife around Carlsbad Caverns’ desert wildlife with attention to habitat and responsible viewing distances. Seasons affect animal movement, and wild sightings should never be guaranteed.
Take in the view from Slaughter Canyon Cave
Set aside time at Slaughter Canyon Cave specifically for the natural panorama, not merely as a stop between activities. Visibility and access can change with weather and season.
