OVERVIEW
Belgrade stands where the Sava and Danube rivers meet, with a historic fortress overlooking the confluence. Nineteenth-century streets, socialist-era districts and newer waterfront development spread across both banks. Repeated destruction and rebuilding have produced an architecturally mixed city whose strongest sense of place comes from the rivers, public spaces and active neighbourhood life.
Social life is one of the strongest draws, with cafés, restaurants and music venues active late into the night. Riverfront paths and floating venues contrast with dense inland streets and monumental government buildings. The city’s confidence comes less from polished landmarks than from its public life, food and complex position between central and south-eastern Europe.
