Beirut stands on a peninsula along Lebanon’s Mediterranean coast, with districts reflecting Ottoman, French, modernist and contemporary periods. Reconstructed central streets sit beside neighbourhoods of older houses, apartment blocks, universities and busy commercial roads. The city has repeatedly been damaged by conflict and the 2020 port explosion, leaving visible gaps and contrasts in the urban fabric.

Restaurants, cafés, galleries and nightlife remain central to social life, while the seafront provides one of the few continuous public spaces. Each neighbourhood has a distinct tone, from historic residential quarters to dense shopping areas. Economic crisis and current security conditions can strongly affect services and access, so practical realities change more quickly than the city’s cultural importance.
