OVERVIEW
Batumi lies on Georgia’s Black Sea coast, backed by humid green hills and a subtropical climate. Its older centre contains nineteenth-century buildings, churches and small squares, while a long seafront boulevard leads past parks, hotels and striking modern towers. The city is both a working port and the country’s main beach resort.
Summer brings crowded beaches, nightlife and a strong domestic holiday atmosphere. Botanical gardens and mountain landscapes lie close to the city, adding greenery beyond the built-up waterfront. Architecture ranges from restored façades to deliberately theatrical new buildings, giving the centre an eclectic appearance that is very different from Georgia’s inland cities.

THINGS TO DO
Admire Armenian Cathedral of Christ the Savior
Look closely at Armenian Cathedral of Christ the Savior for a concrete introduction to Batumi’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Spend an evening in Batumi
Spend an evening around Batumi’s main evening district, choosing venues that fit the local scene rather than assuming every district offers the same atmosphere. Opening nights and late transport can vary.
Find Batumi’s best-known beaches
Spend time at Batumi’s best-known beaches rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water.
