OVERVIEW
Bastia occupies the north-eastern coast of Corsica, where a compact historic centre rises above an old harbour. Tall, weathered houses crowd around the water, while a larger commercial port handles ferries and freight nearby. Churches, market squares and a hilltop citadel reveal the city’s long role as the island’s northern administrative and trading centre.
The old harbour is lively with cafés and fishing boats, but daily life extends into residential streets and the broad square near the ferry port. Mountains rise directly behind the city, creating dramatic views and limiting urban expansion. The port also provides access to the rugged northern peninsula, though the markets, architecture and waterfront are rewarding in their own right.
