OVERVIEW
Ajaccio is the capital of Corsica, built around a broad bay on the island’s western coast. The centre combines a compact old quarter, a marina, markets and nineteenth-century streets, while beaches and rocky coves begin close to the urban area. The city is the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, and museums, statues and family sites make that history unusually visible.
The waterfront and surrounding landscape are as important as the historical associations. Cafés, seafood restaurants and daily markets give the centre a local rhythm, while short journeys reach headlands, coastal paths and mountain-backed beaches. The city is substantial enough to serve as an urban base but remains closely connected to the sea and the rugged scenery that defines Corsica.
