OVERVIEW
Barcelona lies between the Mediterranean Sea and wooded hills, with a compact historic core surrounded by a planned grid of nineteenth-century streets. Medieval lanes, large markets and modernist buildings by Antoni Gaudí are central to its identity, while beaches and former industrial districts extend the city towards the water. Each major neighbourhood retains a recognisable local character.
Architecture is only one part of the experience. Food markets, football, design, nightlife and street life keep the city active well beyond its landmark buildings. Heavy tourism affects the old centre and famous sites, but residential districts, parks and smaller cultural venues provide a broader view of contemporary Catalan life.
