OVERVIEW
Barbagia covers a broad upland area in central Sardinia, far from the island’s best-known beach resorts. Forested mountains, limestone plateaus and deep valleys surround towns and villages with strong pastoral traditions. Stone houses, murals, local festivals and archaeological remains reflect a history shaped by relative isolation and close ties to the land.
Food and craft traditions are especially important, including cured meats, cheeses, breads and woven textiles. Roads are scenic but winding, and many points of interest are spread between small settlements rather than concentrated in one centre. Hiking and village visits reveal a more austere and culturally distinct side of Sardinia than the developed coasts.
