OVERVIEW
Bandarban is a small town in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of south-eastern Bangladesh, surrounded by forested ridges and narrow valleys. It serves as a base for journeys to viewpoints, waterfalls and villages belonging to several Indigenous groups with distinct languages and traditions. The landscape differs sharply from the densely populated plains that dominate much of the country.
Roads climb through dramatic terrain, but travel beyond the town can involve permits, guides and changing access restrictions. Local markets bring together hill produce, textiles and foods not commonly found elsewhere in Bangladesh. The destination is more rewarding for its wider landscape and cultural diversity than for a large collection of sights within the town itself.
