OVERVIEW
Dhaka spreads across a low floodplain beside several rivers, with old commercial quarters, government districts and immense residential expansion forming one continuous metropolis. Mughal-era buildings, markets and river terminals survive within the older city, while modern towers and factories extend far beyond it. Markets, workshops and transport hubs occupy nearly every level of the dense urban landscape.
Boat activity along the rivers reveals the city’s historical dependence on water, while the old quarters contain markets, mosques and decaying merchant buildings. Rickshaws and dense street commerce create constant movement. Heat, air pollution and congestion are serious practical challenges, making focused exploration of selected neighbourhoods more realistic than an attempt to cover the whole metropolis.

THINGS TO DO
Taste regional food scene in Dhaka
Use Dhaka’s regional food scene as a starting point for tasting food connected to Dhaka, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
Admire Dhaka’s landmark architecture
Look closely at Dhaka’s landmark architecture for a concrete introduction to Dhaka’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace Dhaka’s historic quarter
Use Dhaka’s historic quarter to understand a specific part of Dhaka’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
