OVERVIEW
Atauro Island lies north of Timor-Leste’s capital, separated from the mainland by a deep marine channel. Its coastline combines coral reefs, dry hills and small fishing villages, with limited roads and modest tourism infrastructure. The surrounding waters are known for exceptional marine diversity, while the interior supports walking routes between settlements and viewpoints over the strait.
Diving and snorkelling are the main draws, often directly from the shore or on short boat trips. Accommodation is generally simple, and electricity, transport and supplies can be limited outside the main villages. Local cooperatives and community projects are an important part of the visitor economy, giving the island a more personal character than a conventional beach resort.
