Alor Archipelago

The Alor Archipelago is a group of volcanic islands in eastern Indonesia, lying between the Flores Sea and the waters north of Timor. Steep green slopes, dry coastal areas and small fishing villages surround narrow channels with powerful currents and very clear water. The islands are best known internationally for diving, but local weaving, markets and village traditions provide important cultural context beyond the reefs.

Travel is centred on the main town and a small number of coastal lodges, with boats providing access to dive sites and neighbouring islands. Marine life ranges from colourful coral reefs to larger pelagic species, although strong currents mean some sites suit experienced divers. Roads are limited and journeys can be slow, so the archipelago rewards travellers comfortable with simple infrastructure and a remote setting.
