OVERVIEW
Astoria sits near the mouth of the Columbia River in north-west Oregon, where one of North America’s great waterways meets the Pacific. Victorian houses climb wooded hills above an active port, while former canneries and warehouses line parts of the waterfront. Museums and historic sites explain the city’s long connection with fishing, shipping and early exploration.
The river is constantly present, from cargo ships passing offshore to a waterfront path built along old railway lines. Weathered buildings, local breweries and nearby beaches give the city a strong coastal character without making it a conventional resort. The surrounding headlands and forts add context to the dangerous river entrance that has shaped local life for generations.
