OVERVIEW
Antsiranana is a port city at the northern tip of Madagascar, built beside one of the world’s largest natural bays. Broad colonial-era streets, an active harbour and views towards a distinctive offshore rock give the city a strong maritime setting. Nearby landscapes include quiet beaches, dry coastal scrub, mountain rainforest and unusual eroded limestone formations, creating far more natural variety than the city alone suggests.
Markets, fishing activity and weathered colonial buildings provide local interest, while most major nature experiences require road trips outside the urban area. The contrast between dry coast and humid mountain forest is particularly striking. The port works effectively as a base for northern Madagascar, but its seafront, markets and maritime history also justify time in the city.
