OVERVIEW
Ankara is Turkey’s capital, located on the high central plateau far from the country’s better-known coasts. A compact historic quarter surrounds an ancient hilltop citadel, while broad avenues, ministries and planned residential districts reflect the city’s twentieth-century role as the centre of the republic. The national mausoleum and an outstanding museum of Anatolian civilisations are its most important landmarks.
Markets and old houses around the citadel contrast with formal government areas and lively university districts. The city is more administrative and residential than tourist-oriented, yet it provides valuable context for modern Turkey. Considerable distances make public transport or taxis useful. Archaeology, political history and everyday urban life matter more than scenic spectacle.
