OVERVIEW
Amelia Island lies just off the north-east coast of Florida, close to the Georgia border. Long beaches run along the Atlantic side, while tidal marshes, creeks and old oak trees shape the western shore. The main town contains nineteenth-century buildings, independent shops and a working marina, giving the island a stronger historic centre than many nearby beach destinations.
Beach time can be combined easily with cycling, kayaking, fishing and walks through the historic streets. Large resorts occupy parts of the southern island, but residential areas and public beaches retain a lower-key character. The marshes and maritime forests add natural variety, and the island’s compact size makes it practical for a short coastal stay without constant driving.

THINGS TO DO
Play Amelia Island’s leading course
Book a round at Amelia Island’s leading golf course, checking visitor access, dress requirements and seasonal conditions beforehand. Allow for travel time if the course sits outside the main visitor area.
Trace local history at Amelia Island Museum of History
Use Amelia Island Museum of History to understand a specific part of Amelia Island’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Paddle Amelia Island’s main waters
Paddle around Amelia Island’s main paddling waters on a route suited to local water and weather conditions. Hire equipment or a guide where currents, access points or changing forecasts make independent planning difficult.
Cycle Amelia Island’s principal route
Choose a cycling route around Amelia Island’s principal cycling route that matches your fitness and the available time. Check gradients, surfaces and traffic rather than judging the ride by distance alone.
Cycling
2 hours to full day
Find Amelia Island’s best-known beaches
Spend time at Amelia Island’s best-known beaches rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water.
