OVERVIEW
The Algarve covers the southern coast of Portugal, from a broad sandy eastern shoreline to the high cliffs and sea caves of the central and western sections. Historic towns, fishing harbours, purpose-built resorts and quieter inland villages provide a wide range of bases. Beaches are the main draw, but old centres, coastal walking routes and a dry rural interior give the region more variety than a single resort coast.
The central coast has the largest concentration of resorts and nightlife, the east is flatter and more traditional, and the far west is windier and more rugged. These differences make the choice of base important. Trains and buses connect the main towns, while a car opens up smaller beaches and inland villages. Summer is crowded, but many places remain active outside peak season.
