OVERVIEW
Akagera is a national park in eastern Rwanda, where rolling savannah meets a chain of lakes, papyrus wetlands and wooded hills near the Tanzanian border. Elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, antelope, lions and rhinoceroses now live within the protected area, alongside exceptional birdlife. The varied habitats make the park look different from one section to another rather than like a single open grassland.
Game drives are the main activity, but boat trips on the lakes reveal hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds from a different perspective. Wildlife can be more dispersed than in some famous East African reserves, so sightings depend on time, patience and local knowledge. The park’s value lies in combining a full safari experience with Rwanda’s more familiar mountain and forest destinations.
