OVERVIEW
The Ahaggar is a remote mountain region in southern Algeria, rising from the central Sahara around the oasis city of Tamanrasset. Dark volcanic peaks, high plateaux, dry valleys and weathered rock towers break up the surrounding desert. The region is also closely associated with Tuareg culture, whose pastoral and trading traditions developed across this demanding landscape.
Travel here is centred on long desert journeys, camps and high viewpoints rather than conventional sightseeing. Distances are large, roads limited and conditions extreme, so experienced local organisation is essential. The main reward is the scale and variety of the geology, particularly at sunrise and sunset, together with the cultural context provided by local guides. Current security advice should be checked carefully before travel.
