OVERVIEW
The Aeolian Islands are seven inhabited volcanic islands in the Mediterranean Sea north of Sicily. Each has a distinct appearance: some are green and settled, others stark and rocky, and two remain volcanically active. Small harbour towns, cliffside villages and beaches of dark volcanic sand provide the main human settings, while ferries connect the islands and make travelling between them part of the experience.
The archipelago supports more than one style of trip. Visitors can climb an active volcano, swim below steep cliffs, explore compact towns or stay on a quieter island with few roads. Ferry schedules and sea conditions influence how easily the islands combine, so selecting one or two bases is often more practical than trying to see all seven. The volcanic landscape provides the strongest shared identity.

Sail around Aeolian Islands’ main sailing waters on a route suited to the day’s weather and your experience. Confirm the departure point and whether the trip is seasonal before planning around it.
Find Aeolian Islands’ black-sand beaches
Spend time at Aeolian Islands’ black-sand beaches rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water.
Walk Aeolian Islands’ signature trails
Choose a walk around Aeolian Islands’ signature trails that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
