OVERVIEW

Addo is a large protected area in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, best known for one of the country’s densest elephant populations. Its landscape is not classic open savannah: much of the reserve is covered by thick, drought-resistant vegetation that can hide animals until they appear close to the road. Elephants, buffalo, antelope, lions and many smaller species live across several connected sections extending towards the coast.

Wildlife viewing here often depends on patience at waterholes and careful driving through dense bush. Elephant encounters are the main draw, but the reserve’s variety also includes flightless dung beetles, large herds of antelope and strong birdlife. Some areas can be explored independently by car, while guided drives add interpretation. The park offers a different safari landscape from the broad grasslands associated with many better-known reserves.
