OVERVIEW
Abomey is an inland town in southern Benin and the former capital of the Kingdom of Dahomey. Its most important site is a group of royal palaces built over several centuries, where courtyards, reliefs, ceremonial spaces and museum collections explain the political and military power of the kingdom. The town around them is low-rise and practical, with markets and religious traditions that connect the historic court to present-day life.
The value of the town lies less in a large range of attractions than in the depth of one historical setting. Guided interpretation helps explain symbols, royal customs and the kingdom’s role in regional warfare and the Atlantic slave trade. Ceremonies and local spiritual practices remain visible in the town, so the palaces are not experienced as an isolated archaeological site.
