OVERVIEW
Tongariro is a volcanic region on New Zealand’s North Island, with active craters, lava fields and alpine vegetation surrounding several sacred peaks. Roads and settlements remain outside the main protected terrain. The relationship between volcanic cones, alpine lakes and exposed ridges across a dramatic highland landscape shaped by fire and ice and volcano gives the wider destination a distinctive structure beyond its principal visitor area.
Hiking provides the strongest experience, but weather and volcanic conditions can change rapidly. Māori cultural significance and strict conservation rules are essential parts of understanding the landscape. Spending time with both volcanic cones and alpine lakes and exposed ridges across a dramatic highland landscape shaped by fire and ice reveals more of the destination than focusing only on its best known sights.

THINGS TO DO
See Tongariro’s panoramic viewpoints
Set aside time at Tongariro’s panoramic viewpoints specifically for the natural panorama, not merely as a stop between activities. Visibility and access can change with weather and season.
Choose terrain at Tongariro’s principal ski area that matches your ability. Operating dates, lift access and snow quality depend on the season and conditions, so check the current report before travelling.
Walk Tongariro’s alpine trails
Choose a walk around Tongariro’s alpine trails that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
