OVERVIEW
San Francisco is a dense city on a hilly peninsula, with historic districts, residential neighbourhoods and waterfront areas compressed within a relatively small geographic area. Repeated migration and economic change have produced strong local identities. The destination extends from residential districts towards central streets, with local life continuing well beyond the best known landmarks. Beyond the main centre, neighbourhoods and residential districts continue to shape settlement, movement and everyday land use.
Walking reveals architecture, food and dramatic changes in elevation, while fog and wind shape daily conditions. Exploring several neighbourhoods provides a fuller experience than remaining around the principal waterfront landmarks. The contrast between residential districts and local food becomes clearest when more than one part of the destination is explored.

THINGS TO DO
Taste local food at the Ferry Building
Use the Ferry Building and its market days to sample Bay Area produce, bread, cheese and prepared food. Check the market calendar, as the fullest selection is not available every day.
Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge
Cross part or all of the bridge on foot for a close view of its structure and setting. Wind, fog and changing pedestrian access can affect the experience, so check conditions first.
Trace immigration history on Angel Island
Take the ferry to Angel Island and allow time for the immigration-station exhibits and surrounding landscape. Ferry schedules and the island’s scale make this a substantial outing, not a quick city-centre stop.
