OVERVIEW
Salzburg is a small city on the Salzach River, with a preserved historic centre, hilltop fortress and residential districts framed by alpine peaks. Religious architecture, princely rule and music traditions shaped much of its identity. Residential districts spread north and south along the narrow river valley. The wider destination also includes hills and architecture, which place the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape.
Walking is the best way to combine churches, gardens and river views, while surrounding hills provide easy escapes from the busy centre. Festivals can transform prices and crowd levels, with hills providing a wider local context. The contrast between river and hills becomes clearest when more than one part of the destination is explored.
