OVERVIEW
Salzburg is a small city on the Salzach River, with a preserved historic centre, hilltop fortress and residential districts framed by alpine peaks. Religious architecture, princely rule and music traditions shaped much of its identity. Residential districts spread north and south along the narrow river valley. The wider destination also includes hills and architecture, which place the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape.
Walking is the best way to combine churches, gardens and river views, while surrounding hills provide easy escapes from the busy centre. Festivals can transform prices and crowd levels, with hills providing a wider local context. The contrast between river and hills becomes clearest when more than one part of the destination is explored.

THINGS TO DO
Experience Salzburg’s defining festival
Salzburg’s defining annual festival is a scheduled event rather than a year-round attraction. Check the current dates, programme and ticket arrangements before building the rest of the trip around it.

Half or full day
Trace local history at Salzburg Museum
Use Salzburg Museum to understand a specific part of Salzburg’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Admire Hohensalzburg Fortress
Look closely at Hohensalzburg Fortress for a concrete introduction to Salzburg’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
