OVERVIEW
Rotterdam is a large city on the Rhine delta, with high rise architecture, residential districts and one of the world’s major port complexes. Wartime destruction led to radical rebuilding, leaving little continuous historic centre. Beyond the main centre, river and architecture continue to shape settlement, movement and everyday land use. Historic centre and markets form separate but closely connected parts of the destination’s geography.
Architecture, markets and museums provide strong urban interest, while river transport reveals the enormous industrial landscape. Distinct neighbourhoods and international food culture give the city depth beyond its modern skyline. The relationship between markets and museums adds variety without requiring a completely different base. The contrast between historic centre and museums becomes clearest when more than one part of the destination is explored.
