OVERVIEW
Rishikesh is a small town beside the Ganges at the edge of the Himalayan foothills. Ashrams, temples, suspension bridges and residential neighbourhoods spread along both banks, while forest and mountain roads begin close beyond the urban area. Seasonal river levels and pilgrimage events strongly influence movement. Beyond the main centre, temples and residential districts continue to shape settlement, movement and everyday land use.
Yoga, meditation and religious rituals remain central, but rafting and walking create a very different visitor experience. The town is busy and unevenly developed, so quieter areas upstream offer a calmer perspective. The relationship between hills and forest adds variety without requiring a completely different base. A visit centred only on forest would overlook temples, where local activity and landscape remain equally visible.
