OVERVIEW
Ravenna is a small city in northern Italy, known for late Roman and Byzantine churches containing some of Europe’s finest mosaics. A compact centre, residential streets and former port landscapes reflect its shifting historical importance. The city became an imperial and ecclesiastical capital after political power shifted away from Rome, explaining the concentration of major monuments.
The monuments are dispersed but easy to reach by bicycle or on foot. Slower viewing reveals how light, architecture and imagery work together across separate religious spaces. Plain brick exteriors conceal intensely decorated interiors, creating a striking contrast that rewards entering several separate churches. Cycling between monuments keeps the ordinary streets and neighbourhoods continuously visible.
