OVERVIEW
Quiçama is a protected savanna and wetland region in north western Angola, with open grassland, river systems and coastal habitats spread across a large area. Wildlife populations have been reintroduced after severe historical decline. The reserve reaches from river wetlands towards Atlantic coastal habitats, producing wide differences in vegetation and animal distribution. Small communities and fishing activity continue around the reserve boundaries.
Game drives and river journeys reveal different environments, although animal density remains variable. The landscape’s recovery and proximity to a major city make conservation efforts especially visible. Reintroduction programmes have rebuilt some populations, but sightings remain less predictable than in long established safari destinations. Coastal turtle nesting and wetland birdlife broaden the wildlife experience.
