OVERVIEW
Queenstown is a small town on New Zealand’s South Island, set beside a deep lake beneath steep mountain ranges. Hotels, restaurants and residential districts spread along the limited flat shoreline and surrounding slopes. The town has expanded rapidly along steep slopes, placing pressure on roads, housing and the limited developable land beside the lake. The airport and suburban districts occupy flatter ground east of the centre.
Skiing, hiking and high energy activities dominate the visitor economy, while boat trips and scenic roads provide gentler alternatives. The centre is lively and expensive, but quieter valleys remain close. Historic mining settlements and quieter walking routes nearby provide a more reflective counterpoint to the highly commercial adventure scene. Wine growing valleys nearby offer a quieter experience away from the lakefront centre.
