OVERVIEW
Québec City is a large city above the St Lawrence River, with a fortified historic centre, lower harbour districts and extensive residential neighbourhoods. French language, colonial history and provincial institutions shape its identity. The upper town contains fortifications and government buildings, while steep streets descend towards former port and merchant quarters. Suburban districts now extend far beyond the original fortified settlement.
Walking reveals dramatic changes in level and architecture, while food and museums add substantial cultural depth. Winter transforms the streets, whereas summer brings busy public spaces and festivals. Francophone food, winter traditions and neighbourhood festivals preserve a strong regional culture beyond the formal heritage district. The frozen river and deep snow fundamentally alter movement and public life in winter.
