OVERVIEW
Qaqortoq is a small town in southern Greenland, built across steep rocky slopes around a sheltered harbour. Fishing, local administration and education support the compact settlement, while farms and fjords lie beyond it. The town is the largest settlement in the southern region, serving nearby sheep farms and smaller coastal communities. Snow cover and sea ice change access through the colder months.
Walking reveals public stone carvings, residential streets and changing harbour views. Boat journeys provide access to ruins, farms and remote coastal landscapes. Coloured houses climb directly from the harbour, so short walks quickly lead to open rock, lakes and views across the surrounding fjords. Norse church ruins nearby add another layer to the region’s settlement history.
