OVERVIEW
Pskov is a small city in western Russia, centred on a large stone fortress beside two rivers. Medieval churches and residential districts reflect its long role in trade, defence and regional politics. The fortress contains several layers of walls and churches, reflecting centuries of defence on an exposed western frontier. Low suburbs and industrial areas extend beyond the historic river centre.
Walking around the fortifications provides the clearest sense of the city’s history. Current travel restrictions should be checked carefully, while monasteries and rural landscapes nearby add further context. Smaller religious buildings scattered through the city reveal a distinctive local architectural tradition of white walls and simple forms. Rural monasteries nearby extend the city’s religious and defensive history.

THINGS TO DO
Focus on Pskov Museum for a collection that adds real context to Pskov. Check current exhibitions and opening days, then allow enough time for the sections most relevant to the destination.
Admire Pskov-Caves Monastery
Look closely at Pskov-Caves Monastery for a concrete introduction to Pskov’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Pskov Krom
Use Pskov Krom to understand a specific part of Pskov’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
