OVERVIEW
Polonnaruwa is an archaeological city in central Sri Lanka, where temples, palaces and monastic complexes are spread across a broad landscaped area. Vast reservoirs and irrigation works reveal the engineering that supported the medieval capital. The ruins include formal royal spaces, Buddhist monasteries and carefully planned waterworks, revealing several functions of the former capital. Wildlife now moves freely among many of the more remote ruins.
Cycling and driving connect the dispersed monuments, while shade is limited during the hottest hours. The site is most rewarding when its religious buildings, water systems and urban planning are understood as one connected landscape. Large stone images and brick stupas are spread far apart, making bicycles useful for seeing how the monuments relate to the surrounding plain.
