OVERVIEW
Plitvice Lakes is a lake region in central Croatia, where a chain of clear lakes descends through forest over natural limestone barriers. Waterfalls, caves and wooded slopes are connected by boardwalks and boat crossings. Water constantly deposits and reshapes the pale barriers between lakes, so the visible system remains geologically active rather than fixed. Forest wildlife and seasonal snow add further change beyond the water.
The route system is highly organised and becomes crowded during peak hours. Early entry or an overnight stay allows more time to notice changing water colour, quieter forest sections and the scale of the upper and lower lake systems. Routes vary greatly in length, and the upper lakes offer broader forest scenery than the more dramatic canyon of the lower section.
