OVERVIEW
Penang is a large island off north western Malaysia, with a historic urban centre, residential districts and forested hills rising behind the coast. Chinese, Malay, Indian and colonial influences remain strongly visible. Settlement follows the relationship between coast and forest, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes. Beaches and island interior belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival, with coast providing an additional point of connection.
Food is central, from hawker centres to specialist family businesses. Temples, markets and hillside paths provide depth beyond the preserved core, while beach districts feel much more resort focused. Routes through coast lead naturally towards forest, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers, with markets providing an additional point of connection.
