OVERVIEW
Paro is a small town in western Bhutan, set within a cultivated valley of farms, villages and forested slopes. A historic fortress, temples and the country’s main airport occupy the wider valley. Away from the principal landmarks, monasteries gives way gradually to farms across the wider area. Away from the principal landmarks, monasteries gives way gradually to forest across the wider area.
Walking, local food and visits to religious sites provide the main experiences, while the famous cliff monastery requires a demanding climb. Altitude and national travel arrangements require advance planning. Time spent around forest also brings temples into view, adding a different layer to the visit. The relationship between cliffs and temples becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area.
