OVERVIEW
Ooty is a hill town in southern India, set among tea estates, eucalyptus forest and rolling uplands. Colonial era institutions, residential neighbourhoods and busy commercial streets occupy the central plateau. Settlement follows the relationship between forest and neighbourhoods, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes. The destination is physically divided between villages and gardens, with roads and settlements linking the two.
Garden visits, scenic drives and the mountain railway provide the main experiences. Traffic can be heavy, while nearby villages and quieter roads reveal a more rural highland landscape. Exploring beyond neighbourhoods reveals forest, a part of the destination that short visits often miss. Gardens is encountered differently from neighbourhoods, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
